Boyne Resorts VP of Real Estate Development ushers in a new era with West Mountain Project
The West Mountain project is a major real estate development involving countless individuals and numerous groups and companies. Guiding all of it is Scott Kelley, Boyne Resorts Vice President of Real Estate Development, New England.
A recent addition to the Boyne Resorts team, Kelley officially started his position in spring of 2021. He hit the ground running on Sugarloaf’s West Mountain project. Kelley brings a wealth of experience in real estate development, having managed major development projects up and down the East Coast throughout his career.
Where are you from originally?
SK– I grew up in New Hampshire and spent a lot of time exploring western Maine with my grandfather, who enjoyed sharing his love of all sports presented by Maine’s Outdoors.

How did you get involved in real estate development?
SK– I’ve had a lifelong interest in architecture, planning and place making. And after a start in architecture, I moved into property management and brokerage and eventually real estate development. Development has provided me a great opportunity to merge art and commerce into the creation of meaningful places for people to enjoy and live.
What other development projects have you worked on in your career?
SK– I’m fortunate to have worked on projects of many scales and asset types. These have included waterfront developments in Nantucket and Newburyport, Mass. as well as master planned communities, such as the Pinehills, in Plymouth, Mass. I have delivered over 2000 hotel rooms and 600 apartments and condos, along with associated restaurants, spas and retail from Maine to Florida, multiple single family subdivisions, single family homes, marinas, parking, infrastructure and adaptive re-use of historic properties.
Why are you excited to be working on the West Mountain development project?
SK– The West Mountain presents a rare opportunity to participate in a transformative project that aims to sensitively build on the existing resort. It delivers this by creating terrain and infrastructure to service all skill levels, as well as expand options for our many guests who are looking for a permanent slope-side residence or home away from home. This project also reflects the ongoing commitment and investment that Boyne Resorts is making to the future of Sugarloaf.
What are some unique or notable aspects of this development?
SK- The expanded terrain accessed via the proposed lift provides the most immediate and obvious feature. But the other significant aspect here is the real estate, which has been planned in response to topography in such a way that it will provide that ski-in ski-out tuckaway that many of us seek out these mountains to provide. From a planning perspective, this development will bridge the resort to the west to make for an inclusive and cohesive experience no matter the recreation – skiing, golfing or relaxing. And anytime you expand terrain you create the opportunity for new views, vistas and experiences – whether you’re on skis or looking up mountain from your hot tub.
What should people who are interested in purchasing a West Mountain lot or condo know about this development?
SK- This development will be unlike anything else available in New England. It will offer multiple options in both real estate and terrain, and intends to be additive to the community of Sugarloaf.
